Derek has had a passion for athletics, particularly the middle distances, from his secondary school days where he competed and set several records in the middle distances. He then moved to road races including half marathons and then onto the full marathon. Derek has completed more than 100 full marathons, as well as 13 number 35-mile ultra-marathons in a running career spanning over 43 years. It was therefore a dream come true for Derek to become involved with the London 2012 Olympic Stadium.
