Floating first floor extensions, double height spaces, and sunken garden rooms. Super Structures Associates were the structural designers for this innovative and challenging project, which involved a complete reconfiguration of an existing end of terrace house.
During the design process, an unusually weak bearing ground was found to be present on site. This meant that piling was considered the only feasible option for the extension foundations. In order to reduce cost, extensive analysis of the existing footings were carried out, and were re-used to support the main steel frame situated under the existing ground wall, which was removed to open up the space and help the client achieve their vision.
SSA worked closely with the architect to ensure no detail was overlooked, and the result was a project which was worthy of being shown on television… and this is not an empty claim. The project was broadcast on CHANNEL 4: Extraordinary Extensions. Watch here
